Garden Hazards – Garden Pests
I wanted to share a little gardening adventure from a few years ago that still makes me laugh. It was the beautiful start of spring, and my rental’s garden was starving for some TLC. As a gardening buff, I figured, “What better opportunity to freshen up?”
Now, this was long before I worked at a pest control company, so I wasn’t really thinking about any creepy crawlies hiding in the garden. Yes, I had read about red-back spiders and knew they could be in the area, but since I’d seen no webs or spiders in or around my house, I thought I was safe.
So off I went, filled with enthusiasm, to cut that ovey garden in the back, and make a lovely area for us to sit. I’m one of those people who can’t garden in gloves they feel too constraining! There I was, dirt under my nails from pulling weeds, but I was so happy with how much work I finished that day.
All was well until the sun went down. I was washing dishes by the kitchen sink and looked up at the fly screen, and saw a spider. I quickly sprayed it and thought that was the end.
A few more days passed and the spiders started coming out not just outside but also inside! I think I had something like 20-30 spiders in a single night. Can you believe it? One moment, I hadn’t seen a single spider, and the next, it was as if I was throwing a party for spiders!
As it turns out, I disturbed their comfortable hiding spots while I was busy weeding and invited them to join the fun. These, along with my pest control company days, gave me some good gardening lessons without killing myself!
What are these tips?
Always wear gloves when you’re in the garden.
Check your shoes before putting them on spiders love to hide in there!
Keep your garden tidy and well-maintained; overgrown areas can be a spider’s paradise.
Remember, just because you don’t see any signs of spiders, doesn’t mean they aren’t around.
If you keep your garden gloves in the garage, give them a quick check before putting them on.
And if you do find yourself with a spider invasion, don’t wait call us to help keep your home, family, and pets safe!
