What spiders are in Ellenbrook
Hey there! Join us down into the creepy crawly world of spiders aka Araneae! But if you’re a little squeamish about our eight-legged friends you may want to look away for a second!
I decided to kick off with spiders because a lovely customer who lives here asked me the other evening if her kids are allowed to play with them, like they could do back home. My first response was a good-natured “no way!” It isn’t too easy to tell which spiders are safe and which ones could harm you, unless you’re an expert.
Here are some of the spiders you may find in and around Perth:
Huntsman
Black House Spider
Brown House Spider
Daddy Long Legs
Garden Orb
Trapdoor
Mouse Spider
Redback Spider
Red & Black Spider
Sac Spider
Funnel Web Spider
White Tail Spider
Wolf Spider
Spider Safety Tips
As some spiders are nocturnal, it’s often best to be cautious at dusk and night time. During the warmer months you’ll see more spiders, along with their webs.
Clothing & Shoes
When you bring clothes in from the line, give them a good shake to get the spiders out before they bring in the kitchen sink! And if you’ve got clothes or shoes lying around outside, make sure to check and shake them out before wearing them and remember to check your gardening gloves too!
Sleeping
If you’re in a spider hangout area, do your best to keep bedding off the floor and away from walls. Pull on your bedding to dislodge any crafty little arachnids as you shiver under the blankets! If you’re camping with a sleeping bag, a quick inspection will do wonders nobody wants to share a sleeping bag with a spider!
Around Your Home
Spiders are fond of cozying up in attics, wood piles, sheds, and garages. If you must go into these areas, watch for webs. And if you’re gardening or moving debris, gloves are a no-brainer.
The Funnel Web Spider
Now, who do we wanna talk about other than the Funnel Web Spider, the world's most venomous spider! Its bite is rather serious, so keep your distance. If a male funnel web enters your house (they can get a bit feisty while looking for a mate) please don’t attempt to approach it without safety equipment.
If you must catch one, carefully lower a clear container over it and remain calm. If a bite does occur, it’s useful to retain the spider in case identification will help in administering the correct antivenom.
Stay safe, and remember, spiders are just part of our wonderful ecosystem!
